Lake Shore Student and Parent Information
Students and parents, you will find below some information that is in addition to what was distributed in class related to the event that is being conducted RAIN or SHINE on May 05, 2012. This additional information should give you an idea of how the day will progress. The field trip is being conducted in conjunction with an event run by the American Civil War Shooting Association which will give your student an opportunity to see live-fire demonstrations with various forms of Civil War weapons. While not strictly a "reenactment" in the modern conception of the word, these demonstrations are intended to give students an opportunity to witness the accuracy of the various arms and their comparative capabilities. The participants conducting these demonstrations have a vast experience and knowledge of Civil War era firearms, uniforms and tactics. All of this combines to give your student a unique experience and one they won't soon forget. The photos on this site were taken at previous field trips and show some of the various activities your student will be involved in.
Please check the "Saturday Schedule" for information about events to be included in the field trip. STUDENTS should arrive by 8:35 AM!
Below you will find all of the information and forms distributed in class to your students. If you have any questions, please contact me either with the information provided on my course syllabus, or through the Contact Information and Question tab on this website.
The $10.00 fee per student is due by May 1st so that rations can be purchased and other supplies arranged for.

Images from previous field trips.
Students on one end of the battlefield prepare to send messages using signal flags they have created using information included in Hardtack and Coffee. They also use encryption discs to make sure their messages do not get intercepted by the enemy.
On the other end of the field students watch intently as they receive the message sent with the flags. Their accuracy in completing the message and responding determines whether or not they will receive a box from home to make their meal more palatable.
Students wait for their name to be called so they can receive their delicious hunk of salt pork.
After receiving rations students get their fires burning and prepare a meal in the fashion described so vividly by the men who wrote of their experiences in the Rebellion.
Above students prepare to march to the next event of the day. Here they are carrying non-firing replica rifles purchased by Lake Shore to aid in teaching Civil War era drill movements.
In the middle of the day it is time for the big guns. Students learn about various types of artillery and witness live rounds fired just as they would have been 150 years ago!
Students who perform well on challenges during the day may get to pull the lanyard on a full scale artillery piece!
The day ends with a lesson on small arms and an opportunity to experience first hand the feel of live firing an actual Civil War musket.
